Sunday Lawn is probably a game you have never heard of. It is an extremely simple game, with easy controls, simple graphics, decent sound, and it is not very complicated to play, and while it’s target audience might be on the younger side there is still some fun to be found for everyone.
In Sunday Lawn you play the role of a character’s named Charlie. The objective is to control Charlie so he can mow as many lawns as possible before being knocked out by a porcupine, dog or other animals.
To complete a level, Charlie must mow all of the grass in the yard. After completing one yard, you move onto a bigger, more challenging yard. Points are based on how many blocks, measured in yards, you mow in a row without crossing over a piece of grass that has already been mowed.
In the later levels, there will be things such as dog poop that deduct points if you run them over and canisters that supercharge your mower. The game plays alot like Pac-Man except instead of Ghost you have animals and instead of eating dots you mow grass while avoiding animals.
The controls are very simple. There are three ways that you can play. Swipe, where you swipe in the direction that you want to go, arrows, where there are arrows on the screen and you tap them to move in that direction, and tilt, in which you tilt the device in the desired direction that you want to move charlie.
I have found that using the arrows control scheme is the best and easiest way to play. It is very receptive, and the arrows are not in the way of the screen at all. It was very easy to use. Tilt and swipe are not very responsive, so when you tilt/swipe he moves one second later. It is like he is mowing while drunk and his reaction time is slowed.
Also, while in swipe, you cant do any quick movements or Charlie will not respond. You must use crisp, smooth motions, which can get annoying when you are trying to get as much grass cut as you can.
As I said before, the graphics are not amazing, but they aren’t that bad. The grass is varied, but other scenery such as the rocks and flowers are all the same kind of like a hi-res version of a Super Nintendo Game from back in the day. It would be better if it was smoother when Charlie turned, and actually showed him turning instead of just having him pop up facing the other way. Otherwise, the graphics are pretty good for a game of this type.
The sound in this game is pretty basic. It has a little tune at the start up, and during the game there is a short tune that plays at the beginning, and then the rest is just nature sounds and the sound of the lawn mower. In the options menu at the main screen you have the option to turn the sound off, which enables you to play your iPod music instead.
Like I stated in the beginning Sunday Lawn is probably a game you have never heard of. It is an extremely simple game, with easy controls, simple graphics, decent sound, and it is not very complicated to play, and while it would be a great game for the younger ones this title might prove a harder sell in a crowded and competitive Appstore at its current price point of $1.99 as of this review. I would probably wait for the price to drop a little and than take a look because it’s actually a nice little game.
