The next instalment of the iPhone OS, which apple decided to call iOS4 is finally live, and is ready to be synced onto your device free of charge, but the OS only works on later generation devices.
Apple has released its much-discussed iOS 4. It is compatible with the iPhone 3G, 3GS, iPhone 4, and 2nd/3rd generation iPod Touch. Not all features will be available for the iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod Touch devices. Owners of older devices will have to resort to using the earlier operating system.
iOS4 allows folders for storing up to 2160 apps, which is great for those who don’t want to make the decision of which apps to delete to make room for new ones. Multitasking in iOS4 will give users the ability to run live apps like streaming radio, sports scoreboards, and news in the background of other apps, though only available to iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and 3rd generation iPod Touch users.
Among the other 100 promised features in iOS4 are: touch to focus, spell-checker,and bluetooth keyboard support. One small new feature I’ve come to enjoy is that the Wi-Fi is able to stay connected when my device is in sleep mode. I would be excited about finally being able to change the wallpaper on the home screen of my device, but sadly the 2nd generation iPod Touch does not support the feature, which I find strange. It seems the abandonment of older devices is the main disappointment for some, but as the technology advances so must the requirements for its operating system.
Developers are currently working hard on creating updates for their apps to become compatible with iOS4 and multitasking, and a few, like the company ngmoco reporting possible issues with performance under iOS4. It seems the update has not seriously effected any other games and applications as of now, but it is recommended to check the developers website for games or other applications that are of concern to you. A complete list of features is available on the Apple website.
Yeah, I feel that. I did the same thing before the release of the 2nd Gen. iPod Touch. Thought to sell before it looses even more value.
I’m betting on Radio Shack being a good place to get your hands on the iPhone 4 without waiting in ridiculous lines. Early, of course, I doubt there will be many left by the end of the day.
Greta now I just have to hunt down an iPhone on launch day! Apple canceled my order yesterday and now Im left with NO phone since I sold mine last week!
