I have to admit that I was pretty excited about this game long before it came out. Sure I have a thing for zombies and love to play zombie games on my iPhone, but this game was coming from 8lb Gorilla, a group made up of some guys from EA and that meant that there was going to be some nice polish to the game.
I kept my eye on the App Store and picked it right after it was released… and was playing it seconds after that. So… was my own personal hype worth it?
It’s a tragic case of “Yes… and no”.
In Zombies &- Me you are trying to keep your Grandmother’s house safe from the attacking zombie horde. To do this you’re running around outside the house acting like live bait trying to keep them from going after the house. You’re also trying to lead them underneath bombs that are dropping (without getting caught in the blast yourself).
You control your character by moving your finger where you want him to go (ala Warpack Grunts). And as far as controls go, it’s pretty easy and really allows for a this to be a nice pick up and play game.
The sound is also all right, though the default setting is “no sound” (odd). So at first you might think that there is nothing going on. You can change the setting to on the music so that you can listen to the game music or your iPod selections (nice touch). Other than the music you’ve got some explosions, and little else.
And graphically the game isn’t bad either. Although everything is very small and you’re never going to get anything else to look at… Though for what the game is, I think it works find.
And that’s where the “no” of the “Yes… and no” comes in. Zombies &- Me is a very nice pick up and play game (and worth the low asking price), but that’s all it is. 8lb Gorilla has not put anything into the game to give it any depth beyond this. There are no Achievements to make you want to go back for more. There is no Global Scoreboard to make you want to play it again and increase your score. There are no other levels to at least break things up.
The above omissions really left a sour taste in my mouth. I still liked playing the game, but it needs more. There are a few stats that you get for your play, but how hard is it to add a global scoreboard? I’ve seen it in free games! And it I would have even been a little happier to see a little bit of a story at the beginning to explain why bombs seem to be randomly dropping from the sky. This could have been done in a cool “comic book” fashion at the start of the game. Sure you wouldn’t want to watch it every time you play, but sometimes just knowing that something is there is worth the trouble to have it.
But the real missing part of the game for me is the lack of Achievements. This has become one of the most go-to features for me in games like this. Without them there isn’t much reason to keep playing. This game has a lot of possibilities for this… and did none of them.
And I guess in the end, that’s what I’m remembering most with the game… the lack of scratching the possibilities.
With Zombies &- Me, 8lb Gorilla shows that they are a company to keep an eye on in the future. The game is a very fun pick up and play time waster, and has just enough frantic/panic to keep zombie fans happy. Well worth the buck.
Unfortunately, while it’s “pick up and play”, there just isn’t enough “pick it up again and again”… yet. Here’s hoping that 8lb Gorilla gives a little more to buyers with updates.
